Anubis Picture

Here's a sketch I made of one of the famous Egyptian Gods. Anubis is a God with a pretty much humanoid body, but with the face of a jackal. He is probably who we Americans would call the Egyptian Grim Reaper as he is the God of the dead in Egyptian Mythology.

In the ancient Egyptian language, Anubis is known as Inpu, (variously spelled Anupu, Ienpw etc.)The oldest known mention of Anubis is in the Old Kingdom pyramid texts, where he is associated with the burial of the Pharoah. At this time, Anubis was the most important God of the Dead but he was replaced during the Middle Kingdom by Osiris. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumes different roles in various contexts, and no public procession in Egypt would be conducted without an Anubis to march at the head.

In modern literature, Anubis has appeared in many different forms of media ranging from comics, movies, games, and even anime that circled around Egyptian history and mythology. And his name has also been a major reference in such media. One of the best examples of a TV show in which the Egyptian Jackal God has made such an appearance, was in the Gargoyles episode; "Grief" were the Gargoyles found themselves in ancient Egypt were a troubled father summons Anubis and demands to have his son returned from the dead. Anubis explains to the man that such a request is unthinkable and that all are equal in death regardless of age, status, or alignment.

It's also worth mentioning that "Anubis" is the US name of one of the Dark Warlords from the late 80s anime "Ronin Warriors" aka "Yoroiden Samurai Troopers". In that show, Anubis was at first one of the Ronin Warrior's adversaries. But after being persuaded by the ancient, he later turns good and becomes an ally to the warriors.
