SAOM: Atomic Giants Picture

EDIT: Tried to fix Minerva's wonky neck. The angle is still a bit awkward, but it's shorter now!

This batch marks the midway point! I originally meant for it all to be original art, but the four kaiju in the center row all had up-to-date art that just needed to be shaded AND were giving me trouble when I was drawing them, so, y'know, laziness won out. It's still more original art by volume though!

This group is a play on the kaiju tradition of taking contemporary (i.e. not extinct) animals, most of which are normally harmless, and making them really super big with radiation. So, left to right, top to bottom:

Gigant (Myrmidon Worker)
- Role in Story: C List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Gigantomyrmex, common name Myrmidon
- Kaiju Rank: 1
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation)
- Personality: Like the common red ants they mutated from, the myrmidons seem to act as a hive mind - dozens of individuals acting as one organized unit to achieve their goals. Even the small worker class maintains this level of dedication, foraging for food and ravaging enemies with equal precision.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: The myrmidons were one of several kaiju that were created in the rampant atomic bomb tests of the 1950's. Originally they were ordinary insects living in soil that just happened to be saturated with Yamaneon crystals - and also happened to be a test zone for the hydrogen bomb. The ants grew massive and rampaged along the countryside, even making their way to the sewers of Los Angeles. Their onslaught was one of the first recorded kaiju attacks of the First Age of Monsters, and it was assumed the creatures had been completely anihilated.
However, some of the creatures - including a young queen - were captured alive. They were kept secure in Area 51.
Three casts of myrmidons exist: the most common are the workers, which the public called Gigants before their incarceration in Area 51. They were the most well researched kaiju in Area 51, as they were both numerous and incredibly active, allowing researchers plenty of specimens, both live and dead. They were also the first line of defense when wild kaiju Tyrantis unexpectedly stumbled into the facility, with several of the drones fighting valiantly against their much larger foe.
- Artist's Comments: Not much has changed with the myrmidons since you last saw them. I basically just tried to make their thoraxes larger (the last drawing portrayed them as a bit disproportionately small) and tweaked their colors a bit. They are, of course, explicitly based on the ants from Them!, complete with pincer-like mandibles and furry antenna.

Achillant (Myrmidon Warrior)
- Role in Story: B List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Gigantomyrmex, common name Myrmidon
- Kaiju Rank: 2
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation)
- Personality: Like other Myrmidons, Achillant is driven by an devote loyalty to her colony. As the sole surviving member of the warrior caste, she is particularly aggressive when it comes to defending her fellow myrmidons, crushing foes with a savage fury. The Achillant will not stop fighting until either it or its opponent is defeated (and dead, preferrably), though it is capable of enough reason to recognize larger threats.
Their onslaught was one of the first recorded kaiju attacks of the First Age of Monsters, and it was assumed the creatures had been completely anihilated.
However, some of the creatures - including a young queen - were captured alive. They were kept secure in Area 51.
The few warriors in the original myrmidon colony were the first to be targeted by the military, and it was believed that they had all been slain. One particularly nasty warrior clung to life, however, and it was amongst the few myrmidons to be kept alive in Area 51. This last warrior of the myrmidon colony was named Achillant by the researchers, for its ferocious tenacity in combat was almost legendary in scope. It brought the full brunt of its skill into battle with Tyrantis when the reptilian kaiju unwittingly wandered into the myrmidons' enclosure, and while she failed to bring down the fire tyrant, she fought valiantly enough that the reptile spared her life. She was later relocated to Typhon Island with the rest of the colony.
- Artist's Comments: Achillant got some minor tweaks - a slightly altered color scheme here, a slightly more intelligent/sinister face there, etc. But she's still a big ant.
I didn't really plan on changing Achilles's gender, but since almost all ants are female, it was kinda required. It doesn't really matter to her either way - she's just as fierce as a female as she is as a male. Just a bit more rule 63ish I guess.

Herant (Myrmidon Queen)
- Role in Story: C List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Gigantomyrmex, common name Myrmidon
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation)
- Personality: The myrmidon queen is sedentary, being content to take any food her workers give her while laying in her den. Unlike normal ant queens, her fertility is greatly hampered by her kaiju biology. The other myrmidons mistake this for a sign of illness and alternate between trying to heal her and considering abandoning her altogether, bringing her little food in times of famine. Luckily, her kaiju biology also keeps her from starvation by allowing her to absorb latent radiation, leaving her perfectly content in her role as incompetent colony queen.
However, some of the creatures - including a young queen - were captured alive. They were kept secure in Area 51.
Herant was captured when she still had wings while all other potential queens were slaughtered on sight. The lucky insect was set up with a cushy new colony in Area 51, where she lived a life of leisure and luxury. She continued this sedentary lifestyle even when her colony was moved to Typhon Island - the only big change was that she was suddenly able to reproduce much more successfully thanks to the large deposits of Yamaneon on the island.
- Artist's Comments: People wanted to know what the myrmidon queen would look like. Now you do! There's a nod to the Alien Queen from Aliens in her - the film was inspired by Them! after all - while the rest of her anatomy is a hodgepodge of various different ant queens I've found online. It turns out there's a lot of diversity in how an ant queen looks! Different species vary a lot on this matter. I also tried to make her look a bit more regal, so she carries her head high and her armor is studded like a jewel encrusted crown. Queen.

Bobo (Arachne)
- Role in Story: A List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Phidippusfossor, common name Taffy Spider
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Neurotoxin Bite, Spider Silk
- Personality: Bobo is sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows. Curious, inquisitive, tender-hearted, and outgoing, this massive spider is quick to make friends with anything large enough not to register as prey. She shies away from combat, retreating unless she or someone she cares about is cornered.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Bobo's exact origins are unknown, though a secret radiation testing site in Arizona was found deserted with its researchers missing in action a few weeks before the arachnid's rampage. The mighty spider was critically injured with napalm and declared dead to the public, while its remains were taken to Area 51 for study. As this was one of the earliest kaiju attacks, and a fairly low profile one at that, few people remembered the monster, and as such it did not gain an official name for some time.
Bobo recovered from her wounds and took surprisingly well to captivity. Like most of the base's research subjects, she was given a name from Greek Mythology - Arachne, the first spider. The name seemed incongruously dignified for an animal that acted as sweet and innocent as the spider, and as such it barely even stuck with her researchers.
Bobo initially hid in her trapdoor burrow when Tyrantis approached her den, but curiosity eventually got the best of her. The spider cautiously approached the dinosaur, and was elated when the reptile proved to be friendly - at least by kaiju standards. They became fast friends, and Bobo was pivotal in helping Tyrantis escape Area 51, then went on to aid his success in a few other adventures.
- Artist's Comments: Bobo's design is entirely unchanged since last time! She has a bit more accurate spider anatomy in her than she did in earlier incarnations of the story - the fur, the seven segmented legs, etc. I think it makes her design more solid. There are still a lot of flourishes though - spiders don't have necks, for example, or little hands on their pedipalps, or heads shaped like hearts.
Bobo is the best monster.

Girtab
- Role in Story: B List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Orionemesis
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Neurotoxin Sting, Electric Taser Claws
- Personality: Girtab is a vicious monster that lashes out at any and everything it perceives as a threat to its territory. This ever alert creature is so aggressive that she has trouble keeping still, often fidgeting within her den in search of the next fight. While highly territorial, the arachnid has formed a close partnership with the mantis monster Tiresias and tolerates the presence of the wasp kaiju Chloris. She is also not adverse to teaming up with other kaiju against a larger threat, though her social skills still leave a lot to be desired.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Girtab was discovered in a massive underground cave system during the First Age of Monsters - one that would later be discovered to be rich with Yamaneon. Amongst the many massive arthropods that inhabited this cave, Girtab was the fiercest, killing many of the smaller kaiju within her home (and even a few large ones) with brutal cruelty. The cave's inhabitants were eventually killed off, and the cave itself was sealed off - but not before the unconscious form of Girtab was taken to Area 51.
The scorpion's codename was taken from a star within the constellation Scorpio, as even the researchers at the facility had to admit that naming a big scorpion "Scorpio" would have been a bit lazy (and far too obvious). Due to her aggressive nature, she was given her own pen... at first.
Several other kaiju appeared shortly after Girtab was discovered, and soon Area 51 had more monsters than it knew what to do with. Two particularly hardy specimens were eventually put in the same enclosure as her, with hopes that they had enough strength on their own to survive her repeated attempts at assassinating them. Fortunately, they did, and in time Girtab actually grew to tolerate - perhaps even like her companions.
When Tyrantis blundered into her paddock, though, the scorpion returned to her aggressive ways. This monster was more powerful than any she faced before, though, and the scorpion found herself outmatched. She only survived thanks to the intervention of her cell mates, who evened the odds enough to reduce their joint punishment from death to a merciless beating.
When Girtab awoke, she was on a beautiful island full of other kaiju. The mighty scorpion hissed and found a nice secluded spot of her own to defend as viciously as possible.
- Artist's Comments: I went with the more heavily blue color scheme from the Girtab color study. It sticks out a bit more than the others to me, and while she's less of a black scorpion now and more of a black and blue one, I still prefer it. I mean, she's beautiful. Plus scorpions glow blue, so, y'know, science. Girtab is still an homage to The Black Scorpion, with mandibles based on the corny puppet they used for closeups and everything. She also has a ridiculously mean look on her face, because arthropods can emote like the rest of us.

Tiresias
- Role in Story: B List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Deinomantis
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Flight
- Personality: Tiresias is a calm and quiet ambush hunter. While she prefers to sneak up on her prey, the giant insect is exceptionally skilled in combat as well, using its flexible body much like a student of kung fu. While predatory and something of a loner, Tiresias is actually less aggressive than most kaiju. She has an odd friendship with Girtab, and is rarely seen far from the giant arachnid.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Tiresias was the source of one one of the earliest high profile kaiju attacks during the First Age of Monsters, as her rampage was a long, drawn out, and highly public affair that ended spectacularly with a crash landing in Manhattan. She was declared dead and, as this was still early on on the First Age of Monsters, dismissed as a freak event and forgotten, never gaining the name and notoriety of other rank 3 kaiju.
She survived, of course, and was taken to Area 51. Originally she was given her own cell, but space requirements eventually forced her to move in with Girtab. As both were particularly deadly kaiju, it was hoped the two arthropods would be able to survive cohabitation. Girtab predictably initiated hostilities, only to find Tiresias was a far different opponent than what she was used to. The mantis's ability to fly gave her a particular edge, and her graceful yet swift movements proved to be uniquely effective against the scorpion's manic thrashing. The two proved to be evenly matched and, after several conflicts that ended in a draw, eventually declared a truce.
A third arthropod moved into the enclosure later on, and Tiresias took an immediate liking to her. Girtab was less friendly, but the mantis was good enough at mediating that the three were able to live in relative comfort with each other.
Tiresias even developed a sense of loyalty for her cellmates. When a large, green monster burst into their home and became locked in combat with Girtab, Tiresias flew to her surly companion's aid. While she could not defeat the reptile, she did keep it from killing her friend, and eventually got to live a peaceful life on Typhon Island.
- Artist's Comments: Tiresias is still based on The Deadly Mantis. Her name is a bit more complicated than the other Area 51 monsters - the word mantis means prophet, and Tiresias was probably the most famous Greek Prophet. He also switched from male to female, like most of the arthropod kaiju in SAOM did between various drafts! Yeah!

Chloris
- Role in Story: B List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Bug
- Species: Deusvespa
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Neurotoxin Sting, Flight
- Personality: While Chloris was originally just as foul tempered and hyper aggressive as her non-kaiju relatives are believed to be, captivity significantly mellowed her out. The massive insect prefers to glide gracefully through the air above potential threats instead of engaging them, and tends to view the savage brawling of other kaiju as something rather crass and pointless. She feels loyalty to both Tiresias and Girtab, and will fly to their defense when necessary, but otherwise avoids confrontation with relative ease.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Chloris might have been one of the most notorious kaiju of the First Age of Monsters had she appeared in a major metropolitan area instead of a remote African jungle. While her rampage claimed the lives of a few human explorers, it was a trifle compared to most other kaiju attacks on record. It was incredibly easy for the USA to cover up the kaiju's existence and cart her off to Area 51 after subduing her, allowing them to study the massive wasp in secrecy.
While initially more furious and uncontrollable than any other captive monster, Chloris actually took to captivity better than most, settling down far quicker than any other monster in the facility. She was even easy to move when overcrowding forced the researchers to put her in Girtab and Tiresias's cell. The wasp showed considerable restraint when she ignored Girtab's numerous attempts on her life, flying out of the arachnid's reach and looking down on it with what almost seemed like pity.
While it seemed like the insect held little regard for her cellmates - or any thoughts about them at all for that matter - she was still quick to come to their aid when a confused and lost Tyrantis burst into their pen and promptly thrashed the mantis and scorpion. Chloris was the least damaged in this fight, and was still conscious (albeit barely) when their adversary left their pen for another. Perhaps witnessing his mercy is why the wasp held the reptile in high regard from that point on, and paid him particular attention when she was moved to Typhon Island.
- Artist's Comments: Chloris is incredibly loosely based on The Monster from Green Hell. Like Girtab, she has roots in some kaiju I made a short while after I first thought of Tyrantis and Hydra - and by that I mean that having a giant bee kaiju seemed like a great idea to me since I six, even if it took me a long while to make it work.

Minerva
- Role in Story: A List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Human
- Species: Anthrotitan
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation)
- Personality: Minerva is remarkably well adjusted for a person who was made into a giant monster as a secret, illegal military experiment. While bitter and cynical on the surface, Minerva is incredibly caring to her fellow kaiju, and will protect humanity despite the fact that she doesn't identify herself as human. Like Tyrantis she relishes combat, whether it be in dire situations or for the sheer fun of it.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Minerva was cloned from the DNA of renowned kaijuologist Dr. Wilhelmina Lerna, mutated with Yamaneon radiation, and artificially aged to adulthood in a gestation pod within Area 51. She was the first successful genetically engineered kaiju since Hydra, and was designed to be more easily controlled than the serpent. Ironically, she actually proved to be more independent, with a fiery rebellious streak that made her refuse the orders given to her by her pure human creators.
Minerva's life was filled with just as much brutal violence as other kaiju, as she was often forced to fight the other monsters of Area 51 as a combat exercise. While lacking the armor and natural weapons her enemies sported, Minerva used her cunning to win countless fights. The only kaiju she refused to beat into submission was Bobo, and soon both prisoners learned to fake vicious fights to trick their captors into letting them play together.
When a bleeding, bruised, venom-filled Tyrantis burst into Minerva's paddock, she assumed he was merely the next challenge and leapt into combat pretty quickly. She eventually realized he wasn't a threat and laid down her weapon, at which point her captors unleashed their worst inmate to fight them both.
- Artist's Comments: I altered Minerva's skin tone to be less orangey, and gave her a slightly better armor for her torso. Every little bit helps, right? Her staff's color changed a bit I guess, but that's more a result of the changes to Tiresias and Girtab than anything Minerva specific.

Kraydi
- Role in Story: B List Kaiju
- Kaiju Type: Giant Reptile
- Species: Omnivaranus
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Telekinesis, Empathic Telepathy, Teleportation
- Personality: Like all lizards, Kraydi is happiest when he can bask in warm light without being disturbed. He is incredibly contemplative and observes the world around him with a passive yet intense precision. Kraydi is quick to act when threatened, lashing out with his tail as his ancestors did. He is also keen to tear his environment to shreds with telekinesis when fight, using the tattered debris as his own personal artillery. While his violent side is preposterously disproportionate, he is generally very gentle and calm - and his fellow kaiju quickly learned to keep him that way.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Kraydi was part of a particularly infamous high profile kaiju fight in Generiton, USA - so famous, in fact, that even the Area 51 researchers couldn't help using the title the tabloids had branded him with instead of a more literary codename. His rampaged ended when he battled the massive crocodile-like retrosaur Sobekroc. The lizard won the duel and threw his fin-backed nemesis's unconscious form into the sea before collapsing himself. He was contained and shipped to Area 51, getting an enclosure all his own while the public believed him to be deceased.
Kraydi was chosen to be the first test subject of many experiments with genetic mutation - specifically ones designed to create psychic powers. His resilient kaiju biology allowed him to survive numerous horrific trials that would have easily slain normal animals, and within a few decades he was eventually a success. Luckily, the reptile had a fairly docile nature - another reason why he was chosen for the experiments over the other captive kaiju - and never thought to use his powers to escape his enclosure.
His cage window was connected to Minerva's paddock, and the lizard regarded the human-kaiju with some slight curiosity. He was even more curious when a large, scaly green monster broke into it and fought her in a savage duel, though he didn't join in until yet another combatant was dumb enough to break the glass of his enclosure.
- Artist's Comments: Kraydi was once a big part of SAOM, serving as Tyrantis's second in command for three drafts or so. I cut him when I realized he was sort of stealing the story from Tyrantis, and because I felt Hydra fit his role better anyway. I didn't feel a particular need to bring him back... but some of you did. Enough of you, in fact, to make me reconsider his cut. Was there a way I could work him in? How would he have to change?
Kraydi's design fluctuated a lot from one incarnation to the next - he was originally very dragon-like, but got more lizardy with each subsequent draft. He always had psychic powers and was once able to speak - the latter was the very reason why I decided to cut him. I think Minerva is the only kaiju who needs to speak in the series - well, maybe a couple others, but we'll get to them later.
I decided it would be an interesting contrast to give Kraydi the stoic, seemingly simple mind of a real lizard while also letting him have all those psychic powers. It balances him in a weird way - he has some unfathomable advantages, but they're controlled by a mind that isn't inclined to use them. It also puts him in a sort of aloof, mysterious ally role, which gives him a relatively unique niche in SAOM.
Kraydi is sort of an homage to slurpasaurs - his fight with Sobekroc is specifically an homage to the monitor lizard vs. alligator with a fin glued to its back fight in the 1960 film version of The Lost World - but he's not as perfect a fit for that archetype as you could make. I think Sobekroc is probably a much better homage, complete with him being a dinoretrosaur despite looking like a crocodile with fins glued onto him.

Prometheus
- Role in Story: A List Kaiju, Antagonist
- Kaiju Type: Giant Ape
- Species: Pongorilla
- Kaiju Rank: 3
- Powers: Standard Kaiju Powers (Super Strength, Super Durability, Regeneration, Draws Power from Radiation), Pyrokinesis
- Personality: A sadomasochist and a psychopath, Prometheus's twisted psyche makes his fellow kaiju look like happy puppy dogs in comparison. Unfathomably cruel by his very nature, Prometheus can only communicate with aggression, tormenting everything that comes into his path before burning it to a cinder.
- Home Turf: Area 51, Typhon Island
- History: Prometheus was originally a rank 1 kaiju - a large, prehistoric ape-man found in Orleans, California. He never rampaged, killed no humans, and was captured quickly and without much struggle. Sadly, his restrained nature made him a prime candidate for experimentation, and soon Prometheus's life was turned into a living hell. He was tortured with endless genetic experiments, exposed to painful amounts of radiation (which eventually made him swell to the size of a large rank 3 monster), and given the worst treatment of any kaiju in Area 51.
When the psychic experiments on Kraydi proved successful, Prometheus was chosen to see whether they could be replicated in a mammal. He was eventually given the power of pyrokinesis, allowing him to create and control flame at his own will. This experiment was also the last trauma his brain could take, driving the ape into full blown insanity. The shaggy, timid creature that had been brought in to Area 51 at the end of the Age of Monsters had turned into the most sadistic creature ever seen - which merely allowed the scientists an opportunity to see how their mind control technology could work on a being with a particularly fierce will.
When wearing a mind control harness, Prometheus was a powerful weapon. Without it, he was an uncontrollable force of entropy that burned everything it could touch and crushed anything that wasn't reduced to cinders. In short, he was Area 51's greatest atrocity.
The researchers at Area 51 made a huge mistake in unleashing the ape upon Tyrantis, believing they could control it. They did for a while, of course, until Tyrantis pried the ape's helmet off. Free of restraint, Prometheus proceeded to burn the entire facility down, forcing all the other kaiju residents to join forces against him. The last to join the fray was the psychic lizard Kraydi who, after briefly connecting with Tyrantis's mind, teleported all the kaiju in the facility to a new home - Typhon Island. Tyrantis promptly threw Prometheus into a cave, where the ape's own insane thrashing caused a cave in that buried him alive.
- Artist's Comments: Prometheus didn't change much, but it was still fun to draw him again. He's so crazy!
