Greek Muses I Picture
Next in my series of ancient/medieval science are some personifications of science and art in each epoch.
In Antiquity these were the muses. They were daughters of Mnemosyne and Zeus. In ancient Greece works of poetry would always start with a prayer to the muses to ask for inspiration. In mythology they would reward someone by blinding him. At first there was no specific number of muses but later nine muses appeared with special functions and emblems.
Left: Erato the muse of love poetry. Her name means the "lovely" or the "desired".
Middle: Melpomene, muse of Tragedy. Her name means "the singing one" and her emblem is the tragic mask.
