Daughter of Aether and Hemera, or of Uranus and Gaia.

Tethys was an old water titaness and goddess of the seas and rivers of the world, was the female counterpart of her brother and husband, Oceanus.

She was mother of the chief rivers of the world known to the Greeks, such as the Nile, the Alpheus, the Maeander, and about three thousand daughters called the Oceanids. And with Uranus, was the mother of Aphrodite. (when Cronos mutilate the genitals of Uranus and these fell into the sea, forming the foam which would be born Aphrodite). She was also the mother of nine Telchines and Halia.

Tethys has sometimes been confused with another sea goddess who became the sea-nymph Thetis, the wife of Peleus and mother of Achilles during Classical times. Some myths imply a second generation relationship between the two, a grandmother and granddaughter.

Tethys and Oceanus, were the parents of a number of gods and titans

Amphitrite (wife of poseidon and the sea goddess)
Circe (goddess of magic)
Clymene (Iapetus wife and mother of Atlas)
Dione (lover of Zeus)
Fortuna (Goddess of Luck)
Styx (Goddess of the river of souls in the underworld)
Metis (Goddess of Prudence, lover of Zeus, and the mother of Athena)

Being a primary Titaness water and seas, Tethys has full control over the water, is even more powerful than Poseidon and Amphitrite, but at the same level as her husband, Oceanus.

She is of titanic proportions, is the size of a mountain, and the strength of a titan, being a force of nature, his power is superior to that of a common god, almost at the level of primary deities such as Gaia or Erebus.
