Thalia and Ingenue Picture

My first try at oil painting and another piece for Latin Competition & Portfolio concentration. I started this in the summer and worked for a couple hours each weekend with a BIG hiatus in there somewhere. I figured out that oil paints require a large work ethic, for me at least.

Thalia is the muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. In art she is often portrayed holding a comic mask, a shepherd’s staff, or a wreath of ivy.

Inspiration was the thought that while the muses were women, only in modern times have women been able to participate in theater.

The arched background, I thought, was quintessentially Roman.

An ingenue is an ingenuous naive girl or young woman, or an actress representing such a person. The fact that the girl in the painting is not wearing the mask is significant to why it fits into my concentration.

You can figure it out from there.

If anyone has any other critiques or advice on using linseed oil, it would be much appreciated. I have no clue.
