National Flag for The Northern Sun Territories Picture

Hello everyone!

This is a response to Marquis Black's request/contest. His story "the Emperor" ([link]) is awesome and in need of an awesome flag design, representing the lead character's nation. This is where I (hopefully) come in.

The ideas behind it are as followed:

The colours purple and gold/yellow where primarily used by the ancient Norse (Vikings!) from which the English allegedly descend from. The silver/metallic part of the cross and snake is to signify hardness/resolve (reference to steel) and yet also a sense of royalty, which is why it is also an element of the colour of the snake (a reference to the infamous shape of the destructive flame used by the Emperor in the story). The main colour of the snake is white which again refers to the main character.

Now for the more graphic and obvious symbols of the design.

"The tail-eater or the Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail.

The Ouroboros often represents self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end (compare with phoenix). It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. The Ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist's opus. It is also often associated with Gnosticism, and Hermeticism. Carl Jung interpreted the Ouroboros as having an archetypal significance to the human psyche. The Jungian psychologist Erich Neumann writes of it as a representation of the pre-ego "dawn state", depicting the undifferentiated infancy experience of both mankind and the individual child."

The Sun Cross: In Wicca and other neo-Pagan religions the sun cross most commonly represents the sun and the four quadrants the wheel of the year, i.e. the four seasonal cycles of the year.

In astrology, the cross in a circle represents the planet Earth, formerly believed to be the center of the cosmos in Classical times.

The sun cross has become a widespread symbol of the contemporary Gnostic revival. It is taken after the upper part of the Gnostic cross and the Cathar cross and represents the Pleroma.

The Norwegian Nazi party Nasjonal Samling used a golden sun cross on a red background as its official symbol. Various white nationalist and Neo-Nazi groups use the sun cross; the Knights Party also uses it in their official flag.
However, many Neo-pagans consider this use of the symbol a misrepresentation of their faith, and these groups as having a lack of understanding of it's true meaning.

In the Ascended Master Teachings, a group of religions based on Theosophy, the most important deities are St. Germain and the Master Jesus. St. Germain is regarded as having a twin flame (divine complement or celestial wife) who is an ascended lady master named Portia. In iconography of the Lady Master Portia, she is shown as wearing around her neck a white sun cross with a violet background, since she works with St. Germain, who is regarded as the master of the seventh of the seven rays, the violet ray.

> I combined these concepts and in 20 minutes (I suck at paint) voila. I know not very artistic, but it's just an idea I had. Took the snake-eater design from wiki. That's all. You can share ideas if you want, just be nice will ya?
