Sophia Picture

Sophia, whose name means “wisdom”, had been the Goddess of the Pagan philosophers for centuries. Sophia’s name comes from the Greek word for “wisdom,” the personification of the Female Divine. Indeed, the word “philosopher”, first used by Pythagoras, means “lover of Sophia” Philo, a Jewish Gnostic, calls Sophia “the Way” and the royal road which leads to God

The ancients represented this fundamental duality mythologically as God and Goddess. When the Mystery looks at itself, God looks at Goddess. The Christian Goddss Sophia “the introspectin of God”. According to The Sophia of Solomon,
Sophia ia a “reflection” of God, an “image of God”, a “mirror of God’s active power”. She is God’s psyche. She is the appearance of that essence.

From Christian myth we know that the Holy Spirit is a pseudonym of the Goddess Sophia. Heracleon and Ptolemy tell us that the dove symbolizes “Sophia, the Mother above”. The dove was a widespread symbol of the goddess in the ancient world and was adopted by the Christians as symbol of the Holy Spirit. Christians of the Ophite school teach that at his baptism “Christ and Sophia, the one enfolding the other, descended upon Jesus and he became Jesus Christ”.
