Your doom, Pentheus, is written in your name Picture

He will know, in the end, the son of Zeus, Dionysus, god true and perfect, and for men, the most terrible and sweet.

Inspired by The Bacchae, the tragedy by Euripides. For those who don’t know the story, Dionysus is the son of Zeus and Semele. Semele, daughter of Cadmus, king of Thebes, was tricked by her sisters, who were jealous of her, into asking Zeus to reveal himself to her, causing her death (mortals cannot see a god’s true appearance). .

Some years later Cadmus abdicates in favor of his grandson Pentheus, who soon bans the worship of Dionysus. Dionysus comes and drives all the women mad and he turns them into his Bacchae (his followers). He then comes to Pentheus, who does not believe he’s a god, and he is imprisoned by him. Dionysus doesn’t reveal himself to him but, instead, he slowly brings Pentheus to madness (see my tumblr post for the exact quote:… ) and to his death: he convinces him to spy the Bacchae disguised as a woman, but as soon as they see him they hunt him down and they dismember him (among them there was his mother as well as his aunts, the same ones that had tricked Semele to death).

And Dionysus does all this with a smile on his face

Bonus: Pentheus' name comes from πένθος, pénthos, sorrow or grief, so yeah, he actually has his fate written in his name
