Sailing with Dionysus Picture

acrylic on cement
2009

In Greek mythology, Dionysus was the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness and ecstasy. In tribute to Dionysus, I painted this masterpiece completely drunk.

The piece was painted on a 200cm diameter cement table top, designed to give the impression of a Greek plate. Since the table is on the rooftop patio of the home over looking the Gulf of Mexico, I wanted there to be a connection with the sea and drink.

I really wanted to create a surreal experience: to sit at a table that is a massive plate, with Dionysus, over looking the sea on a rooftop that looks like a boat.
