Pantheon - Demeter Picture
Demeter - Goddess of the grain, harvest, agriculture, fertility, and the seasons. She is one of the lesser known than the other Pantheon members, but is still famous for the abduction of her daughter, Persephone. Kidnapped by Hades, Persephone was held in the underworld while her mother, Demeter, begged Zeus for her return and neglected her duties in her grief. As crops withered and failed, an agreement was finally reached that if Persephone had not eaten of the underworld's food, then she would be allowed to return home. Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds, and was therefore condemned to spend six months with Hades, and six months with her mother each year. When separated from her daughter, Demeter grieves and the earth grows cold. Hence the creation of the seasons.
