Origin of the Tonalcoatl Picture

Two drawings from my latest sketchbook, also concerning major elements from the CUETZPALIN Mythos.

The Cuetzpalin (a race of humanoid reptiles, who in some cases also possess wings on their arms and feathers on their back) wearing a stone mask made of obsidian & jade, shaped after the skull of a Chronpuchian (a race of humanoid birds) is Huitzopoca: the Macabraic elemental spirit of wind (ehecatl in nahuatl, a language used by Aztecs and other peoples, including about a million people in Mexico today), or, as he prefers to call, air (ihyíotl, also known as 'breath', a form of vital energy in the Mexica/Aztec perception) in motion (Ollin - movement, which names the current Sun Era, Nahui-Ollin, attributed by the Mexica to the patronage and guidance of either Nanahuatzin (as Tonatiuh the sun personification) or Huitzilopochtli the patron of Mexico and God of War (one of those who has inspired not only the naming of this character from CUETZPALIN, the other being Tezcatlipoca (Huitzopoca doesn't mean anything at all in nahuatl, but is rather a portmanteau of Huitzilpochtli and Tezcatlipoca) but also several other characteristics). As a Macabraic (one out of nine deities that have come into being, and who are also a specific element. In Huitzopoca's case, wind), Huitzopoca has many powers that possess a major influence over the life of all other beings, and to him it's attributed the very attributes of violence and also of the hunt, caused not only by the lack of resources, but mainly a weakened state of mind, in which a being is made feeble enough to be unable of living by its own vital energy, and thus needing to draw it, one way or another, from another being's. This negative quality ultimately forged the very social contract and the forced sociabilization which most beings pass through at some point in their lives. That archetype of society is the primal difference between a deity (immortal) and a mortal, the first exists independing on anything else (even though it may have its existence vocally denied by the blind and materialistic, ahistorical atheists, the deities are the ever-present archetypes which have molded what is made real and what is not); while the later exist only depending of others (be it through affirmation or any other mean). Despite that, Huitzopoca himself is not only the primordial instigator of this state of impotence and the cyclical violence, but also one who constantly practices it, thus also a primordial instigator of what most Macabraics have called, for aeons, as "The Great Experiment", the development and manipulation of environments aimed in testing the survival abilities of all beings to the maximum, based initially on their physical capabilities. That experiment would take further steps towards a plethora of results that would even descharacterize it to some, but for Huitzopoca, it's been always the same, and the basis for success in that experiment, as he admits, is the mortal being using the cyclical violence to its favor, violence to resist the harsh conditions, rather than attempt other means. Of course, for a immortal, this 'resistance' was a word which, like all others, meant nothing.

The Macabraics have come into being, but arguably weren't the first to exist. There are beings such as Chaos, that is a dimension itself, and other six ancient beasts, the Huehueyolcatl, that existed alongside the Macabraics, if not even before. The Macabraics were all applying their influence and experiments on their plans and planets of choice, while the Huehueyolcatl had other beings, not immortal like them or the Macabraics, but at least sufficient in their own spans, living in the atmospheres which themselves produced out of their own. The Huehueyolcatl were powerful and fearsome, but they weren't feared by the creatures under their watch and residing on their bodies the same manner they didn't requested reverence, or anything, for that matter. That is where one of the Macabraics, the treacherous Tempo, has gathered the other eight, that were all different from it (as all were individuals), but made them believe they had things in common: the will to rule, to bind anyone else to their will. A simple act would move the powerful nine in shaping entire galaxies to their wills, force their needs on others by determining what they thought, wanted, needed and could do instead of the individual beings themselves. Huitzopoca, by far, has challenged the self-sufficient nature of the beings which inhabited the Huehueyolcatl: Those originally were mandragoreans, or entities of the life-giving substances Teyoliatl and Mnemosyne, but as Huitzopoca determined they threatened the limits between mortals and deities, has made them def, blind (as the K'iché Maya points out in the Popol Vuh's account of the creation, the first men had their once wide vision shortened by vapor which the gods put on their view) and especially thirsty and hungry. The needs for murder, and perhaps even that of eating aren't actual needs, but programming done by Huitzopoca a long time ago.

But that was just the beginning. With the Great experiment going on, Huitzopoca would use it as an advantage, as well, to find out what body better suited him. And this is when, around the Jurassic era of Tredius, he developed the first specimens of Cuetzpalin with a Tonalcoatl (Tona -'heat' or 'fate', and Coatl - 'snake'):

highly evolved pineal-gland-like structures which guards the consciousness of the Cuetzpalin individual even before birth, from its development within the egg to its' hatching, from the development of its paws and its quadrupedal ages to the growth and development of its bipedal body, then from the shed of its scales in each season, from the growth of its feathers and wings, until its death. And then beyond. The Cuetzpalin actually don't die, but they rather shed its own body like a skin, and its Tonalcoatl, fully conscious, moves to another body, in many cases, searching for parasital relationships with other beings bigger than the Tonalcoatl until it takes over the body and consciousness of a host, eventually turning its body into a reptilian one, as near as it gets to a Cuetzpalin likeness it can (mammal, fish and bird hosts often suffer heavy transformations). The proccess by which a Tonalcoatl takes over the body of a host is long, and some Cuetzpalin can't avoid death if their Tonalcoatl don't get to a host soon enough. For it to be succesful, the host is usually put in dangerous near-death situations. The hosts can sometimes keep telepathic relationships with the parasite.

This ability, however, was mostly unknown by the Cuetzpalin societies of the plan of Aztlán and pretty much everywhere else before the 'discoveries' of Tlatoani Cuetzpalin Ahuitzotl, a survivor from the fall of Nahui-Atl, because while the gifts of such a kind could make possible for Huitzopoca to shift into anybody , it opened the possibility for a whole kind to find no use in battling through their lifespan, as it could exceed most lifespans of other lifeforms. But it didn't, thank to the preservation of a warlike Aztec culture, much thanks to Huitzopoca's own role as the patron god of Aztlán's altepetl (city-state) of Yaoyotepetl. For centuries, the Aztec Confederation has moved armies of Cuetzpalin, hunahu ('humans') and other kinds such as Micteca, Centzontotochtin, Centzonhuitznahua and even the Cihuacoat, Cihuateteoh & Tzitzimimeh, outside and within Aztlán, its homeland. During the ancient Topakhon Wars, the thirst for conflict seeded within the culture perpetuated by the confederation has been used by outside powers such as the Frashokeretian Alliance (headed by a collaboration of the Ohrmuzdian Empire, the Chronpuchian Empire and the Anunnaki Association) to fight the Ors Ohorela, and that have costed the lives of several Aztecs in exchange for their supposed glory, in a measure that has broke up the allegiance of several city-states to the main confederation, in a way that Huitzopoca and his closest allies, such as Tlaloc, Chalchiuhtlicue, Tonatiuh, Coatlicue, Patecatl, Mayahuel and Xipe Totec have taken matter into their own hands to counter the 'rebellion' from 'separatists' such as the Cihuacoatl, Centzonhuitznahua, Tzitzimimeh and Cihuateteo led by Coyolxauhqui from Coatepec and later by Itzpapalotl from Tamoanchan, sacrificing possible allies, who cared more about the unity of Aztlán than about its participation in a war of foreigners.

But that has been several centuries, even millennia after Huitzopoca has created the Tonalcoatl, which define a Cuetzpalin's origin, and what made possible for him to keep a single consciousness to have control over several, multiple shapeshifting bodies at once. The development of those deals with a pre-Macabraic antiquity, the before mentioned Chaos. Legend has it that the reptile/bird-like ancient body of Huitzopoca found out the first Tonalcoatl, a Feathered Serpent, lurking out of a conch (ehelaicacozcatl) that used to be the Ater Adamantis of a Huehueyolcatl, Kukulcan. From that time, it had been ages since the elder Huehueyolcatl Cipactli had already been bound to hold the entire plan of Aztlán, and also since the first Cuetzpalin, still possessing no Tonalcoatl, and in some cases, having snake tails (like the Cihuacoatl, a later hybrid which resulted from the crossing of male Cuetzpalin and female hunahu from the underworld of Aztlán) instead of legs and feet, existed. But the struggle between Huitzopoca and Kukulcan, and later, Kukulcan's imprisonment in Oztoman, the series of caves within the partially hollow stone to which Cipactli was chained to, have been revolutionary to the Cuetzpalin, to the universe and to Huitzopoca himself. He's been able, through this ability to divide himself into several parasites, even to control Kukulcan and other Huehueyolcatl (like Yaxcocahmut, in the later Topakhon Wars) as they were bodies of his. From that point he'd make several apparitions in the universe and agilize his own influence even more directly. One of his Tonalcoatl was the Ningishzida who prevented Gilgamesh from attaining immortality in Dilmun, Tredius, and another has inhabited the body of Tepeyollotl, who guarded Oztoman, and who prevented another Teotl, Chalchiuhtotollin, from unveiling his secrets (Chalchiuhtotollin, in turn, was an avatar of one of Huitzopoca's brothers, Tempo, who despite aiding him in the capture of Cipactli millions of years ago, hasn't been let by his brother to come to Aztlán, for Huitzopoca wanted to keep the properties of the Teyoliatl, the "Atl-Tlachinolli" ("sacred water" in nahuatl, its name for blood) of the Huehueyolcatl a secret from all other Macabraics. Legend has it that the skull wore by Huitzopoca's main form is that of Chalchiuhtotollin, to show his brother that the kind he developed, the Cuetzpalin, are more able to resist and adapt on hostile environments (thus being more apt to "The Great Experiment") than the Chronpuchians developed by Tempo. But of course, Tempo cares less about this material and even individualistic aspect of the "Great Experiment", for the Chronpuchian Empire is the largest and more well established empire in the universe for centuries, that has formed a succesful culture of subjulgation, oppression and assimilation, under the guise of a Republic and unchallenged by outside or inside resistence for centuries (as Tempo says, for the Chronpuchian Empire there's no outside, for every civilization in the universe is influenced, by one or other way, by the Chronpuchian Empire). Besides Huitzopoca, perhaps the only Macabraic that still uses this sort of materialistic speciesism to affirm its own creativity and excellence (through predators) is Xiuhtecuhtli, and both are seen as immature by several of their brothers nevertheless. The development of the Tonalcoatl also made possible, in cooperation with the use of hidden elements such as Tepoztli (called Serapel elsewhere outside Aztlán), the development of the fabled Xiuhcoatl weapons, the first and perhaps more powerful of them being Huitzopoca's very weapon.
