apples of Hesperides Picture

The golden apples which were given to Hera by Gaia as a wedding gift when she married her brother, Zeus. The apples were in the safekeeping of the Hesperides, i.e. the daughters of Nyx, and the dragon, Ladon, in the far West beyond the Pillars of Herakles. He was sent to fetch the apples as one of his twelve labours, and upon slaying the serpent, stole the precious fruit. However, Athena later returned them to the Hesperides.
