Seeds of Autumn Picture

Pomegranate seeds which, according to Greek mythology, became the cause of Autumn.

Beautiful Persephone, daughter of Demeter (the goddess of fertility), was one day abducted and taken into the Underworld by Hades.

Although Hades wished to marry her, she missed her mother so dearly that she refused even to eat until they were reunited.
Back in the world of the living, Demeter was lonely and nature ceased to be fertile, coming into autumn and winter.

In the end, as a compromise, Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, promising by this to spend the winter months in the Underworld and the warm summer months on Earth. Spring and autumn occur because Demeter prepares to greet or bid her daughter farewell for the year.

Thus Autumn is born from the first pomegranate seed.
