The wedding of Peleus and Thetis is perhaps the most famous wedding in Greek mythology, not for the bride and groom, nor the guests. It was the one not invited who caused this wedding to remain in our minds for over three millennia.

The only thing worse than a woman scorned is a goddess scorned. Particularly if the goddess is Eris.

Enraged at her snub, she arrived anyways, and as revenge, she threw the Golden Apple in the middle of the crowd, and said "to the Fairest". As Eris had hoped, Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena fought over the apple, each claiming the title of most beautiful. After coming to an impasse, Zeus declared the winner would be chosen by the most beautiful man in the world, a Shepherd boy named Paris. Each promised Paris a gift-- Hera offered him fame and power, Athena offered him wisdom beyond the gods, and Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris chose Aphrodite and Helen as his prize, thus setting off the events of the most famous war in ancient history. The Trojan War.
