Prosèrpina was, in the ancient mythology, an agrestic moon goddess. She was Cerere's daughter and was abducted by Pluto, the king of Hades, while she was engrossed in plucking flowers, in company with her maids, near the Pergusa lake shores, in Enna (Sicily). Pluto dragged her into his chariot, drawn by four black horses and Prosèrpina, by becoming his bride, was the queen of the underworld.
After her mother asked Jupiter to let her getting free, she was allowed to return on surface for six months a year and to spend the remaining six months with Pluto. The Greeks so explained changing of seasons.
