The Wildlife of Atlantis Picture

This piece was a part of an exhibition I held in Horsham, January 2008.

All the pieces were based on seafaring lore and legends and I was particularly interested in the Kraken. I also looked at the ancient mythology of mermaids, Plato's Atlantis and the superstitions of sailors.

After reading some of Plato's writings of Atlantis I was inspired to get my thoughts onto paper. Plato talks of abundant fruits and vegetables in Atlantis and also, surprisingly, of elephants. I was stunned by this idea and loved the thought of elephant ghosts roaming the ruins of a sunken city...so I painted THe Wildlife of Atlantis. The idea is so amazing to me though, that I may well continue this line of thought into a further series.
