Chalchiuhtlicue: Aztec Goddess of Love, Beauty, Youth, and Water

100 Gods/Goddesses Challenge

HOLD ON FOR A SEC WHILE I LOOK UP HOW TO SAY HER NAME.

I see a lot but let's go with Chal-chee-hoo-TLEE-kway. Yeeeahh. Her name means 'She of the Jade Skirt' :3

Sometimes she is portrayed as a river with a prickly pear growing out or along side of it. The fruit of the prickly pear is taken to metaphorically represent offerings of human hearts, of course, so here she is picking some hearts off one. X3

While she is the goddess of water, she is not the goddess of rain. (That's her husband's department.) She actually was responsible for the fourth age of the world and had to flood it... but to be fair she did change humans into fish so they could survive into our current age!

I love the rainbow colours of Aztec art. >w< It's got a weird geometric-y style that's really cool to look at too. Check it out: [link]
