taken during a recent trip downtown to visit some old friends in high places... this one of my favorite spots to visit in this old cemetery. this shot is of the door to a very small mausoleum type structure in the cemetery - when i 1st saw it, i was most surprised to find an Egyptian themed memorial in a Jewish cemetery. that in no way diminishes how cool it is, it's just an interesting cultural contradiction. obviously it's not meant to represent an actual "Pharaoh" figure from the ancient Egyptian era, more likely a scribe or other artisan, perhaps a representation of the many figures & demigods believed to judge the soul of the departed after Death. i'm not as up to date on these particular details of Egyptian history/mythology (a big interest of mine) so i may be way off, but it doesn't really matter. in the end, it's just a really neat piece of art which made for a nice photograph. i've affectionately come to call him "The Doorman" or "The Bouncer" sometimes.
