Pokemon One a Day: Ponyta
The Fire Horse Pokemon
It’s a horse! On fire! It’s Ponyta, classified as the “fire horse” Pokemon. Well yeah, thank you captain obvious! Incidently, Growlithe is classified as the “puppy” Pokemon and not “fire dog” but yeah - today’s illustration features a lanky and adolescent pony
Completing the Geodude line, I knew I was going to try something more realistic in approach and design. Ponyta is nothing special in terms of concept - it looks like our real world pony with chibi eyes and fire where its hair would be. Getting a chance to draw out anatomy, I focused on finding a photo of a pony I liked and referenced it largely for the work seen here. The alterations I made to the reference photo mostly affect the legs - they’re actually longer than what I depicted and it is evident in my early drafts of Ponyta.
I decided to have it resemble the original Pokemon in stature by shortening it but still giving it a very awkward look - most baby mammals have very stick thin legs with knobby kneecaps - think deer and giraffe, and obviously ponies. From there, I built up the form very in a basic and formulaic way, smoothing down the work and defining muscle and anatomy as seen in my reference shot. I was having trouble deciding if I should go textured or smooth, and I ended up with something in between.
In the end, the work is forward in depiction and unmistakably Ponyta. Ain’t she a beaut? Anyway, that’s all that needs to be said for today’s artwork - thanks as always for reading and viewing my work! Let me know what you think, and see you tomorrow! Good night!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
