Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto Titaness of motherhood and she is the twin sister of Apollo. She was almost the exact opposite of her twin brother, Apollo, who was the god of the Sun, truth, healing, music, and poetry. He was very wild and had lots of affairs with other mortals, nymphs, and gods while Artemis was more serious and was a virgin goddess. There are lots of myths about Artemis, one of these myths is the tale of Orion: Orion and Artemis were hunting partners. Artemis soon fell in love with him, breaking her promise. Apollo, worrying that this man would make her forget her wish to remain a virgin, sent a scorpion, Scorpio, to kill him. It did so, and Artemis hung Orion in the skies. In another version, Apollo challenged Artemis to hit a target from afar. She did so, but the target was Orion, unknown to Artemis. Artemis was distraught, and Apollo hung him in the skies. Another myth is about Callisto. Callisto was a hunting companion of Artemis. Zeus turned into Artemis, and took advantage of her and raped her. She bore a son, named Arcas. When Artemis found out she turned the two into bears, and forced them to fight each other. They both died, and were hung in the heavens as the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. As a child, Artemis had asked from her father Zeus to remain an eternal virgin and therefore became one of the three Virgin Goddesses in Greek mythology. Artemis had absolute sovereignty over nature and was said to bring fertility to all places that worshipped her. Usually accompanied by Nymphs and Oceanids, Artemis loved to hunt with arrows dipped in poison.
