WIP: Idunn and Loki Picture

Edit: some issues fixed in this draft: callego.deviantart.com/art/WIP… Looking for some feedback, so check out that link and let me know!

I did the sketch for this a couple years ago when one of my Norse mythology students at Berkeley requested a picture of Iðunn-- I did this sketch, then never had time to complete it and instead ended up doing this Christmas-y anime-ish pic of her instead: callego.deviantart.com/art/Idu… Check out the original sketch for this pic here: idrawvikings.tumblr.com/post/6…

Since I seem to have a habit of working Iðunn into winter pics, I am considering turning this into my entry for the Norse Mythology Blog's Midwinter contest--but we'll see. I may do another Tomte & Friends pic for the contest, since my last one got third place: callego.deviantart.com/art/Lat…

This current WIP is an illustration of the myth of the abduction of Iðunn by the giants--a myth which is easily shoehorned into a "vegetative seasonal cycle" narrative, with winter coming b/c of her abduction (she is a fertility goddess) and spring coming again when she is returned--although I would argue that the myth as we have it preserved has some other prominent concerns. But I'll have to post my paper on the topic on academia.edu some other time (and when this pic is finished I will definitely do a blog post at vikingsbooksetc.wordpress.com about the myth behind it).
